If you wanted to describe Mangere with a single word, you might choose ‘connected’. After all, this is where you’ll find Auckland Airport, or cross Manukau Harbour to reach the city centre.
But the type of connection that matters most in Mangere isn’t transport. It’s our shared culture, because that’s what helps us know we belong here.
Over the next 15 years, we’re bringing thousands of new homes to this community. We’re doing it to strengthen these connections, because our housing should match the mana of our people.
Our new homes are a range of sizes and types, built to suit all needs. In the three neighbourhoods where we’re currently active, we’ll have about 2,500 homes for sale and 1,400 new social homes.
We’re also upgrading the pipes that bring us fresh water, as well as the ones that help it drain. We’re making our streets safer and greenspaces healthier.
And we’re doing it all by working together with government agencies and private businesses. Together, we’re making sure we meet the needs of our people, now and into the future.
Food, shopping, events and chances to connect can all be found in Mangere Town Centre.
Your first visit might be for the library, doctor, dentist or pharmacy. Or maybe it’s to browse its 90+ stores. Whatever brings you here first, it’s the people and sense of belonging that’ll keep you coming back.
This is more than a local shopping spot. It’s a place to share stories and celebrate our culture at events like 275 Day. From weekend markets to live performances, there’s always something happening here.
Whether you’re heading to work, school, or out to explore, Mangere gives you choice when it comes to travel.
That could be across the city by car to Viaduct Harbour in half an hour on State Highway 20. Take the same road south and make it to Manukau in 10 minutes, or southwest to Auckland Airport in less.
Staying local? Join the cyclists, scooters and walking commuters on our shared paths. Or travel by bus, whether it’s a short trip or a longer journey, and use the time to unwind.
The schools in Mangere reflect our culture, languages and strengths. Our teachers help young people build confidence and grow up knowing they belong here.
You’ll find more than 30 early childhood centres, primary and secondary schools in our wider area. That means parents have the freedom to find the place that best matches the needs of their tamariki.
As they get older, students can also stay close to support while taking the next step in their learning journey. Both Manukau Institute of Technology and AUT South Campus are nearby, with opportunities for anyone who wants them.
Wherever you’re starting from, Mangere is a place with pathways for people to learn, grow and succeed.
Manukau Harbour and fertile soils provided the food sources that first drew Māori to this area. Centuries have passed, but our natural environment has continued to shape our home. It made life here possible.
Places like Mangere Mountain still carry these stories today. Once a thriving pā and centre for growing food, it remains a strong link to our whakapapa.
Over time, farming, market gardens and new industries helped our community grow. Auckland Airport opened in 1966 and connected Mangere to Aotearoa and the world beyond.
Today, that history lives on through our diverse, proud community. It’s part of what makes us feel connected – to each other, and to where we come from.
