In eastern Porirua, we're proud of the history of our place, and we’re excited for its future.
That’s why our name honours both. Te Rā Nui reflects the purpose of our work here. It speaks of the ‘rising sun of a great new day’ that brings new light, new energy and a greater sense of wellbeing to our land and people.
It was gifted to us by Ngāti Toa Rangatira, our mana whenua and – along with Porirua City Council – our partners in this project.
Together, we’re working to prepare eastern Porirua for the future. Over 25 years, we’ll build 2,300 new social homes here. About 2,000 older whare will be renewed, and up to 1,500 new homes will be enabled for the private market.
We’re building homes to suit all needs, but a strong community needs more than housing. Our work reaches beyond the front door. It means fresh water flows from our taps and drains away safely, thanks to our upgrades to parks, pipes and roads.
These civil works connect us, and not just to services. They help us protect and enhance nature, and our wellbeing – for us, for our tamariki, and for our mokopuna.
In eastern Porirua, everything you need is close to home. Shops, healthcare and the library are right on your doorstep.
Shared spaces keep our community strong. They’re where people catch up, support local stores, and stay connected.
Nature surrounds us here. At Bothamley Park, you’ll find paths for walking and cycling, places to play, or space for a quiet moment outdoors.
You’ll see our culture shine in Cannons Creek at the Pacific Night Market. Here, and at Waitangirua Market, you’ll find clothing, crafts, connection and kai.
But these flavours are just a taste of our place. On the Porirua City Council website, you’ll find even more events, sports and chances to connect.
Living in eastern Porirua means having easy links to where we need to be.
Paths for walking and cycling connect our neighbourhoods, with each other and to tracks through places like Bothamley Park.
Going for a drive? Be at Titahi Bay Beach in about 10 minutes. Or take State Highway 59 to travel further, reaching central Wellington in less than half an hour.

Learning is part of everyday life here. It’s shaped by the people, places and stories around us.
Our schools sit at the heart of eastern Porirua. They are places where tamariki and rangatahi can explore who they are and what they care about. There are options for every stage, from early learning through to high school.
As students grow older, the Whitireia and WelTec campus in Porirua then offers hands-on study close to home. Here, you’ll find courses designed to become real jobs and careers.
The land, the water, and the people who have called Porirua home. All have shaped our history here.
In return, our history has shaped this place as we know it today. Te Awarua o Porirua, Mana Island, and Komanga Point were all named by the great Polynesian explorer Kupe.
Māori have lived here for hundreds of years since. First, life was built around the harbour. Then communities grew. Farming, industry and new housing all helped Porirua grow into the city it is today.
That shared history is still felt across our community. We find it in the way we connect, support each other and take pride in where we live.
In 2023, mana whenua Ngāti Toa Rangatira gifted us the name Te Rā Nui. It speaks of the ‘rising sun of a great new day’, because we’re working here to build a brighter future for eastern Porirua.
Our name is a powerful expression of our community’s strength. It shows the importance of the work we’re doing here – for, and with, the people who call this place home.
Many of us came from across the water, in search of a better life for ourselves and our whānau. For us, a great new day means our community can set off on our next journey together.
