Te Ararata
The stream that flows through Mangere is what inspired Te Ararata, our name for this neighbourhood. Once called Mangere West, local iwi Te Ākitai Waiohua gifted us our name. Over the next seven years, we’ll grow the number of homes available to rent and buy here.
The stages of our work here
To help us plan, our neighbourhood is split into Te Ararata A and Te Ararata B.
Te Ararata A (TAA)
Our work in TAA will happen in four stages. For stages 1 and 2:
- We finished our infrastructure works in 2022. That included upgrades to roads and pipes, improvements in Te Ararata Creek, and two new wide, green and safe walkways – from Elmdon Street to Welby Place and from Watchfield Close to Moyle Park.
- When work is finished, these stages will have brought us more than 480 new homes. So far, we have built:
- 158 new social homes, of 223 in total
- 153 new homes for sale, of 258 in total
We’re currently planning for stages 3 and 4, and will share more information as soon as we can.
Te Ararata B (TAB)
Our plans for TAB will include more than houses. Road works and pipe upgrades will prepare us for new homes, but they’ll also keep us all safe and reduce the risk of flooding. As soon as our plans are ready, we’ll share them with the community.

When we share our plans, we’ll always let you know when we expect work to start and how long it might take. At first, we may only be able to give broad timelines, but we’ll provide more details as soon as we can – both for Te Ararata B and stages 3 and 4 of Te Ararata A.
If our work affects your home, your street, or how you get around, we’ll make sure you know what’s happening and when. Some things you can expect during each stage are:
- Temporary noise and traffic changes
- Construction vehicles in your area
- Short-term changes to footpaths or parking
- Clear signage and regular updates
- Support from our team whenever you need it
