Civil works complete

Oakley Creek is cleaner and our homes are safer thanks to our pipe, park and road upgrades.

The major upgrade works we’ve finished in Ōwairaka do two key things: protect the homes already here, and help us prepare for growth.

Our infrastructure projects, also known as civil works, have made Te Auaunga Oakley Creek healthier. Larger pipes – some big enough to walk through – mean raw sewage no longer flows into our stream during heavy rain. The same pipes also safely bring our homes fresh water, help it drain, and flush away our waste.

To build the upgrades, we had to pull about 7,000 cubic metres of ancient volcanic rock from the earth. These basalt chunks were then donated for people to use when building streams, water courses and sea defences. In one case, an artist carved a piece of this basalt into a beautiful sculpture that now sits in the courtyard of another Auckland housing development.

Most of all, these upgrades mean we can safely build hundreds of new homes in Ōwairaka. Here’s a snapshot of the infrastructure we built:

  • 4.7km of new stormwater pipes
  • 99 manholes
  • 1650mm – the diameter of some of the new stormwater pipes
  • 1.3km of new wastewater pipes
  • 9km of power and communications cables moved underground
  • 3 new stormwater outlets
  • 13,000 new plants and trees
  • 68 new streetlights
  • 2km of upgraded roads
  • 6.2km of new concrete footpaths
  • 650m of new roads
  • 435m – the length of sliplined and cured-in-place pipes, fed underground without the need to dig trenches
